Response to the capture of Venezuela's head of state Nicolás Maduro in Caracas has been sharply divided along political lines. Trump administration representatives and GOP members have celebrated the enforcement of a long-standing US drug trafficking indictment, while Democratic leaders have criticized the operation as a breach of Venezuela's self-determination.
The US Attorney General proclaimed that Maduro and his wife face indictments in a federal court, such as conspiracy related to drug terrorism, drug smuggling, and firearms violations. "The defendants will in due course face the full wrath of US law on US territory," the declaration said. It concluded by praising the commander-in-chief for seeking accountability and saluting the courageous armed forces for a highly effective mission.
"Maduro is NOT the President of Venezuela... Maduro is the leader of a drug trafficking cartel... and he is facing charges for pushing narcotics into the US," said the top US diplomat.
The US Vice-President echoed this position, stating that the administration had presented several chances for resolution but was adamant that drug trafficking must cease. "He is the latest person to find out that President Trump means what he says," the statement concluded.
On the other side, Democratic response was swift and scathing. Senators accused the administration of transforming an anti-narcotics operation into a regime-change venture.
One senator accused that administration officials had looked the Senate directly, assuring the mission was not about overthrowing a government. "I distrusted them then and we see now that they knowingly deceived to Congress," the senator posted.
The senator, a former foreign policy employee, warned that the attack "is not a sign of power. It's not wise diplomacy. It puts Americans at danger... and it delivers a dangerous signal to other powerful leaders." The strike would harm the US standing and alienate the country from its friends, the senator added.
Another prominent progressive figure accused the president of abandoning its supporters by "launching a war of choice." The lawmaker called for a public stance against "bloated defense budgets and militarism," advocating for greater focus in domestic priorities like jobs, healthcare, and schools.
Regional experts noted that the armed operation targeting facilities in and around Caracas constitutes the largest US military operation in the region in decades.
"The timing is not a coincidence – it appears designed to undercutting the marking of Maduro's most recent presidency," commented one analyst via a statement. The expert cautioned that the situation depends on the response of the country's institutions and armed forces.
Although they have so far avoided direct confrontation with US forces, deployments point to attempts to contain instability. "A smooth transition remains improbable," the analysis continued, "and the risk of resistance from loyalist factions – including parts of the military – stays high."
