A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
