People who experienced abuse by church officials have expressed fresh optimism following their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so soon in his leadership spoke volumes about his commitment to tackling the problem.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Advocated

The group is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would permanently remove any clergy member who admits to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "opposition in certain regions of the globe" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Legacy Challenge

The new Pope, who took the position in spring, has taken on this longstanding issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to church laws to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the measure is personal. The Canadian activist revealed they were victimized by a clergy member who was later moved between different parishes.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we aim to collaborate with him," they expressed. "Both sides share the common objective, we seek to end abuse by religious officials."

Historic Encounter

Multiple representatives of the coalition, which includes victims and supporters from over thirty nations, met with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a female survivor abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

Hickey added the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal story and seemed "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I believed like he was genuine, practical, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Changes

The organization is hoping that revisions to church regulations will enable the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted experts and compiled documents that they plan to present to Pope Leo.

"He seemed engaged in looking at it," Hickey remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recently released Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or dismissal of Church leaders or staff in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The report also pointed out that survivors repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for church leaders and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they told the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This represents as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, they voiced hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and building a connection and continuing to strengthen that bond is a move in the right direction," they commented.

They concluded that they shared with the pontiff: "Even though it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the narrative ends - he appreciated that."
